How the Selection Process Works
- All applications are reviewed blind by our team to avoid bias.
- Talks are scored primarily on the strength of the idea. We are looking for ideas worth spreading, ones that can inspire, challenge, or shift perspectives.
- Your style, story and expertise should bring the idea to life in a way that only you can.
- While you don’t need to be from Wolverhampton, a strong link to the city will receive additional marks.
- Scores are combined to create an overall ranking. The top 20 applicants will be invited to a short audition/interview in December (in-person or online). At this stage, you will simply be asked to talk about your idea, not deliver your full talk.

What to Expect if Selected
Being a TEDxWolverhampton speaker is a journey, not just a one-day experience. If chosen, you’ll be supported every step of the way:
- Coaching & guidance from our Curator, Clare Roberts-Molloy, and the TEDxWolverhampton team. Clare has coached almost 100 people for the TEDx stage.
- Workshops and rehearsals to refine your talk and build confidence. Selected speakers will receive full details of rehearsal dates. While there is some flexibility, the expectation is that you attend at least 75% of rehearsals. If you don’t believe you can commit to this, we recommend you don’t apply.
- A speaker community you’ll be part of long after the event, with alumni friendships and collaborations often lasting for years.
FAQS
Do I have to be from Wolverhampton?
No. TEDxWolverhampton began with the mission of showcasing local talent, so we do score applications on the strength of their connection to the city.
How many applications do you receive?
Usually over 100. We select just 9–12 speakers each year.
Do I need to be a professional speaker?
Not at all. In fact, we prefer real people with real ideas. What matters most is your idea and how you bring it to life.
What commitment is expected if I’m selected?
Speaking at TEDxWolverhampton is more than turning up on the day. You’ll attend rehearsals (in person), work closely with our coaching team, and commit time to refining your talk. Speakers must attend at least 75% of rehearsals.
Do I need to attend the whole event?
Yes. Speakers are expected to attend the full day on Saturday 27 June 2026 to support each other and take part in the popular end-of-day Speaker Q&A. If you cannot commit to being part of the entire event, please do not apply.
Should my talk relate to the event theme?
No. The theme guides the event curation, but you do not need to force your idea into it. Please don’t mention the theme in your application or your talk title.
What should my talk title be?
Give your talk a clear, working title. Don’t overthink it – titles can be refined later.
Are some topics harder to get selected for?
Yes. For example, the topic of ADHD/ASD and associated subject areas often receives many applications. We are unlikely to select more than one talk on a heavily covered topic, so your idea must stand out as uniquely yours.
What happens if I’m not selected?
We’ll share some general feedback. However, as a small volunteer team, we can’t provide individual notes. Many applicants reapply in future years.
FINAL TIP
The main thing we’re interested in is your idea. It doesn’t need to be brand new to the world, but it should be delivered in a way that is uniquely yours. Show us your passion, your perspective, and why your idea is worth spreading.

What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
Our event is called TEDxWolverhampton, where x = independently organized TED event.
At our event, TED Talks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
